Evidence tampered with in Kane’s case, accuser’s lawyer drops out of case

For the past 8 weeks, Chicago Blackhawks’ star Patrick Kane has been under watch by the media and the NHL, along with its fans. The entire case has been hard to follow at times, and it is unclear if Patrick Kane is guilty or if he is innocent.

Tuesday, September 22, the case became even more bizarre when a bag that was supposed to be full of evidence was delivered to the accuser’s mother’s house. The bag was supposed to be full of evidence, but when the mother found the bag on her front porch, the bag had been tampered with.

The mother then reported this to her daughter’s attorney Thomas Eoannou. There was a press conference held by Eoannou on Wednesday, September 23 to report what had happened.

“Yesterday, the rape kit evidence bag was anonymously delivered to the home of my client’s mother,” Eoannou told the press. “We went to great lengths to authenticate that. That is the evidence sticker. That is the evidence bag. We confirmed it through the hospital yesterday and we had a number of law enforcement come in. This is no hoax.”

Later that afternoon and after the announcement, Erie County Commissioner of Central Police Services John Glascott, denied that any evidence had been mishandled or that the chain of custody had been broken.

“All evidence related to this case that was given to Erie County Central Police Services by the Town Of Hamburg Police Department is accounted for and remains in its original packaging in the possession of Erie County Central Police Services,” Glascott said in a statement reported by CBS. “This includes the evidence in the rape kit and the packaging itself.”

The next day, Eoannou decided that he would no longer be the attorney for the accuser for this case. On Thursday night, Eoannou said he was no longer confident in the story he was told when the mother delivered the bag to him.

“I can only say that I don’t know what’s true and what’s not true,” Eoannou told the associated press during a news conference held at his downtown Buffalo law office. “I received the storyline from the mother. And it’s my position that I’m not comfortable with that version of the events.”

The announcement of Eoannou quitting came just a day after the announcement of the evidence bag being ripped open. The family of the accuser has decided to continue to try to get a conclusion on the case. After Eoannou’s decision, family members of the accuser released a statement on Thursday, September 24, CNN reported.

“While we are disappointed that Mr. Eoannou has withdrawn from his role providing advice and counsel in the criminal investigation of Patrick Kane, we have every intention of pursuing this case to a just conclusion,” the statement said. “It must be emphasized that there exists no evidence or allegation that the accuser herself had any knowledge of the evidence bag until it was brought to Mr. Eoannou’s office.”

Kane last week said he did nothing wrong and expected to be absolved. He also apologized for the distraction he has caused his family, teammates, the Blackhawks organization, and fans, reported U.S. News.

Kane’s attorney, Paul Cambria, believes that Eoannou dropped out of the case because he was lied to. “This case needs to go away. It’s tainted from one end to the other,” Cambria told The Buffalo News. “It’s obvious to me that Eoannou dropped out of the case because he was lied to by his client’s family. They fabricated evidence. I told you yesterday that this whole thing was a hoax, and now it is obvious.”

The case will continue as the family is looking to get a conclusion. The Blackhawks have decided not to speak on the issue and have decided to let Kane keep playing. The Blackhawks play their first game of the season at the United Center on October 7th.
