Astronomy club members discuss cosmic mysteries

Astronomy club officially began this semester on Jan. 19 with a discussion on the Big Bang.

“I think astronomy is cool because space, there is so much that we don’t know and so many therories it’s fun to learn,” sophomore Zack Yeazell said.

It was created by science teacher Rachel Kieft and co-sponsored by fellow science teacher Melissa Susnis.

“I am a space geek myself and wanted to give students who share my excitement for the cosmos a place to get together and explore the universe,” Kieft said.

Students can either watch a documentary on the topic of the week or watch a series of short videos. Then, a Q and A about the topic begins. The club also provides snacks.

“I like talking about space because it expands my mind thinking about it,” junior Marissa Dellamorte said.

Meetings are held in room 213 on the second Tuesday of every month immediately after school for between 30 minutes to an hour.

“It’s facinating to think about how our planet is a speck in space and there are other things out there,” junior Brady Clark said.

About 45 students showed interest in the club initially.

“I didn’t get to learn about space or the galaxy that much in school, and I thought it was interesting,” senior Tori Seggebruch said.Astronomy
