Pumpkin flavoring rises as Fall approaches

As leaves fall and the seasons begin to change, so do the menus of stores across the nation. The fall flavor of pumpkin spice can be found everywhere in today’s market – drinks, candies, desserts and anywhere in between.

According to the Washington Post, the sales of pumpkin-flavored items has soared to over $360 billion in the past year. This is up 11 percent from the 2013-2014 year, and up over 80 percent from 2011.

“My favorite pumpkin flavored food is definitely homemade pumpkin bread. It makes me nostalgic for fall, and so I love it,” said Emily Cresta, Senior.

One of the most iconic fall treats is Starbucks’ beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte. It is released seasonally, and the release date is always well-anticipated and anxiously awaited for by many. It was created 11 years ago, and according to a press release from the company itself, has become Starbucks’ most popular seasonal drink ever. This year, however, the drink has been changed.

“After hearing from customers and partners about ingredients, we took another look at this beverage and why we created it so many years ago. It was simple – espresso, perfectly steamed milk, warm fall spices with delicious flavor of pumpkin pie that reminds you of the cool, crisp days of autumn. So, with that great taste you know and love, the PSL returns this fall, and this time it will be made with real pumpkin and without caramel coloring,” said Peter Dukes, the project manager of the Pumpkin Spice Latte creation, in a Starbucks Newsroom report.

Starbucks isn’t the only company quickly catering to the public’s exponentially increasing desire for all things pumpkin – Panera and Dunkin Donuts have also jumped on board and joined the trend.

Much like Starbuck’s revamped latte, Panera’s Pumpkin Spice Latte has been changed as well – according to a release by Panera Bread Company, over 9,000 locations will be offering a “clean” version of the Pumpkin Spice Latte. This version will eliminate all artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and sweeteners. It will feature real pumpkin puree, molasses in place of artificial sweetener, and all natural spices.

Dunkin Donuts has an extensive list of pumpkin flavored items – according to the menu they are offering hot and iced pumpkin coffee and lattes, a pumpkin donut, pumpkin Munchkins, and pumpkin muffins.

The pumpkin craze has enveloped much more than the coffee industry – foods such as Twinkies, almonds, and even cereals. Hostess has recently announced that Pumpkin Spice Twinkies will be exclusively available at Kroger this fall.

Kraft’s Planters has announced that they will be releasing limited edition Pumpkin Spice Almonds, and Kellogg’s has announced that they will be offering limited edition Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini-Wheats.

According to specialtyfoods.com, at least one in ten American eateries now features pumpkin-something on their menu during the autumn months. Companies are rushing to provide the public with pumpkin-flavored everything, because of the imminent increased revenue that it provides.

No matter what season, the public’s taste for different flavors is bound to change. In the case of fall, this means that pumpkin  takes over, changing from what was once a limited edition spice, to what will surely be a fall food staple for years to come.
