Makeup Review: Fenty Beauty Collection

Arielle Coleman, Staff Writer

The Fenty Beauty Collection creator Robyn Rihanna Fenty has stated in multiple interview that her main focus for her products was to make sure they can be used for all types of skin tones. From the fairest of tones to the richest, she made it her mission to accomplish this goal. After two years of dedication, she released her collection to the public in the fall of 2017, and it has received much success.

As an act of a public service, I took it upon myself to get the first-hand experience of her most popular products from her line. With prom season right around the corner, every girl needs to have the perfect fresh faced “beat” as teens like to call it.

When the line was first released, it included foundation, primer, concealer, contour sticks, a universal shade lip gloss, pressed powder, and highlighters. Initially, the products launched were focused on flawless skin. With 40 boundary-breaking shades, her attempt to achieve this look was recognized almost immediately.

“I like my makeup to look like skin—really good skin.” Fenty told “InStyle” magazine.

I purchased the Pro Matte Filt’r Foundation along with the Pro Filt’r Primer about a month ago, and I am quite pleased with the results and how perfectly it achieved every claim that was printed on the bottle. This product retails for $30.00.

The foundation is said to be a buildable medium to full coverage formula and as it says in the name, it is a matte finish; so if a person has dry skin it may be best to use a moisturizer underneath for the best results. This product is a liquid based formula that includes 1.08 FL OZ. and is recommended that it be shaken before application.

One issue that I had with this product was that since it was meant for more oily skin types, this formula is a bit on the dryer side, which caused the product to dry very fast. Using the paired it with the Pro Filt’r Primer which retails for the same price as the foundation. This product is said to smooth out pores and allows for the foundation to appear as if there is a literal filter on the face.

My tip for this would be to blend fast but efficiently and apply on face in sections; not all at once for this can lead to difficulty trying to achieve a seamless finish.

While speaking of seamless finishes, Fenty’s Invisamatte blotting pads add an entirely new and fresh dynamic to her beauty line. This powder retails for $30.00 and can be reapplied as much as needed throughout the day. Interestingly, this products formula was created so that it wouldn’t produce a “cakey” build up.

Fenty’s Killawatt freestyle highlighters have become a huge success in the beauty community because a blinding highlight is extremely in this season. These polished products retail for $30.00.

The texture is very fine and smooth and applies almost like a liquid when it glides onto the skin. This product is also versatile as it can be used on multiple areas of the face and body. In fact, I have even found that it can act as a body glitter for special occasions. Whether a pop of the cheekbone or a shimmer in the inner corner of the eye, this product can be trusted to deliver any desired look.

With the many shades that the beauty line offers, their most popular shade is the blazing “Trophy Wife.”  This is the brand’s most prominent formula and offers the most “bling” that makeup geeks like myself crave. This was one of my favorite products from the line since it was the easiest to apply and highlighter is my new go-to makeup product.

“I love the Killawatt highlighter because you can use it in so many ways. I put it on my eyes, cheeks, and body. It goes on smooth, and the texture is superfine, almost like liquid—plus it’s extremely high-shine. There’s a ton of different colors.” Fenty said in her “InStyle” magazine interview.

Just weeks after dropping her beauty line, the $60.00 Galaxy glitter eyeshadow palette was released along with a few eyeliners. Each of the eyeliners retail for $20.00. As this may appear pricy, her products always deliver a special treat. These matte eyeliners have the ability to release glitter when rubbed after application.

Her glitter palette was created to be a complementary palette to be paired with other matte based palettes. Using the glitter palettes alone may be a bit of a “unicorn” overload if attempting to have a blended appearance. These shadows were quite pigmented and gave a ton of bling when applied to the eye. I would even say that a few shades would be able to stand alone as high shine highlighters.

Overall, I would give her entire line a strong nine out of ten. I love almost every product from her line and how easily accessible they are to find in local beauty parlors. I also appreciate her intense strive for creating quality formulas for those of deeper tones as well as the lighter shades.

It is no secret that shades on the far ends of the color spectrum are indeed underrepresented in the beauty community, and her goal for her line was well achieved.
