Top 8 Movie Remakes Out Before 2020

Jayden Dale, Graphics Editor

Cinema in 2016 has been riddled with more remakes, good and bad, than I can count.  In spirit of that, here are the top 8 films I’m excited to see remade before 2020.

#8 All Quiet on the Western Front

This 1930 War-Drama was the first to project the horrors of war onto the silver screen. It is renowned for encapsulating just that perfectly through detailed character dialogue and solid cinematography. It was first remade in 1979 with the same name and became even more iconic. With new technology and techniques, the makers of the 1979 version improved upon the 1930 masterpiece while still creating a non-redundant remake. This war classic will be retold sometime in 2017 starring Travis Fimmel (Vikings).

#7 Nosferatu

In 1922, German director F. W. Murnau created the first film adaptation of vampirism with Nosferatu, the story of Thomas Hutter and his encounter with Count Orlock. Originally adapted from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but after a legal snafu Count Dracula became Count Orlock and Vampire became Nosferatu, giving the film its infamous name.  First remade in 1979 as Nosferatu: Phantom Der Nacht and now, again, said to be remade sometime before 2020.

#6 The Crow

crow

The tragic death of actor Brandon Lee brought this 1994 macabre indie thriller to light. The Crow has been a cult classic since the second it hit screens. It is said to have a remake coming soon, leaving fans of the original to wonder if it is in poor taste. It will feature Game of Thrones Star Jason Momoa as Eric Draven.

#5 Battle Royale

battle

Battle Royale is a wall-to-wall action thriller from Japan. Both the book and the film took Japan and America by storm. The concept of people being forced to fight for their life against each other has since been seen in countless renditions of the concept. The cheesy film adaptation has gained cult classic status among film geeks worldwide and is said to have a remake in the works. It’ll be interesting to see if the filmmakers go at it with a more serious outlook or stick to their campy roots.

#4 The Magnificent Seven

This will be a remake of a remake. The Magnificent Seven (2016) is a remake of a 1960 western classic of the same name. The original is based on director Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 film Seven Samurai. With stars the likes of Chris Pratt, Matt Bomer, and Denzel Washington, fans of the original two films will be surely on the edge of their seats to see if the film hits hard or misses completely. The Magnificent Seven hits the box office on September 23rd, 2016.

#3 Creature from the Black Lagoon

creature

Some horror buffs may recall the 1954 classic, or even its two horrendous sequels, but what many don’t know is the idea for a new-age remake has been finally brought to the surface in 2016. With offers to stars such as Scarlett Johansson, Universal Studios plans add “the Creature” to it’s list of monsters (The Mummy, Dracula 9000) for its new combined universe, much like Marvel’s cinematic universe of characters. It appears we will be returning to the black lagoon sometime in late 2017.

#2 Akira

akira

Written and directed by the source material’s creator Katsuhiro Ôtomo, the 1988 Japanese post apocalypse-drama set the standard for modern anime with its prolific writing and excellent animation. A reboot is said to be in the mix. Hopefully, it will live up to the monument of modern animation that is the original Akira. According to Cinemablend.com, Akira will have a live action remake before 2020, written by Marco J. Ramirez (Netflix’s Daredevil, Son’s of Anarchy)

#1 American Psycho

Many filmgoers revel in the cinematography, directing, and acting in the 2000 box office smash American Psycho.   It’s due for a Hollywood facelift directed by Noble Lincoln Jones, known for assistant directing The Social Network. Whether the facelift is needed or not is left to the fans. Moviegoers will be excited to see if the filmmakers expand on the original masterpiece or ruin it completely. The axe murdering, Huey-Lewis-loving, Patrick Bateman will be making a return to the silver screen some point before 2020.
